Key Differences

The 8 most important areas where our partnership system diverges from standard SAYC, with detailed explanations.

HCP DESC BOTH New
1 Suit opening HCP range

Our System

12-19

SAYC

13-21

Our system uses a narrower HCP range (12-19) for one-level suit openings compared to SAYC's wider range (13-21). This means: We can open with 12 HCP (SAYC typically requires 13) Hands with 20+ HCP are handled through 2♣ or 2NT openings Partner knows opener has a maximum of 19 HCP when opening at the 1-level

2 1♣ opening requirements

Our System

5+♣ or 3-3, denies 5M

SAYC

3+♣

Our 1♣ opening is more descriptive: Typically shows 5+ clubs May be opened with 3-3 in minors (no 4-card diamond suit) Explicitly denies holding a 5-card major suit Partner can rely on this information for subsequent bidding decisions SAYC allows 1♣ with as few as 3 clubs and doesn't explicitly deny a 5-card major.

3 2♣ minimum with long suit

Our System

17+ (game in hand)

SAYC

22+ or 9 tricks

Our 2♣ opening can be made with fewer HCP than SAYC if the hand has sufficient playing strength: A hand with 17+ HCP and a long suit that can make game opposite a yarborough qualifies This allows more flexibility with powerful distributional hands SAYC requires either 22+ HCP or 9+ playing tricks

4 2♦/2♥/2♠ openings

Our System

20-22, 5+ suit (strong)

SAYC

5-11, 6+ suit (weak)

This is a fundamental structural difference: Our system uses STRONG two-bids showing 20-22 HCP with a 5+ card suit SAYC uses WEAK two-bids showing 5-11 HCP with a 6+ card suit This means: Our system does NOT have weak two openings Hands with 20-22 and a good 5-card suit open at the 2-level (not 1-level) This fills the gap between 1-level openings (12-19) and 2♣ (22+)

5 Blackwood 5♣ response

Our System

0 aces

SAYC

0 or 4 aces

Our Blackwood responses are unambiguous: 5♣ shows exactly 0 aces (never 4) This eliminates the ambiguity of SAYC's "0 or 4" response The 4-ace response is handled differently (likely through context or a different bid) This makes slam decisions clearer when responder holds 0 aces

6 Blackwood 5NT-6♣ response

Our System

0 kings

SAYC

0 or 4 kings

This is a custom convention not found in SAYC: After a 1-level opening and 2NT(!) forcing response, opener can initiate the Weak Suit Asking sequence: Responder's answers show: "Сильная козырная масть" (Strong trump suit) "нет короткой масти" (no short suit) "синглет/ренонс в..." (singleton/void in...) Purpose: Helps evaluate slam viability by identifying potential weak suits where the partnership lacks controls or length.

7 Weak Suit Asking

Our System

Yes (custom convention)

SAYC

No

Our 2-level overcalls can be made with slightly fewer points: SAYC requires 10-16 HCP for a 2-level overcall Our system allows 8-16 HCP This gives more flexibility to compete at the 2-level with good suits The 1NT overcall range (15-18) is identical to SAYC

8 2-level overcall HCP

Our System

8-16

SAYC

10-16
